Owen Sloane Featured in Detroit News, N.Y. Times, and Arizona Republic

Owen J. Sloane, co-chair of Berger Kahn's Entertainment and Media Group, is featured in three recent news articles.

Detroit News, July 31, 2007 -- Owen is quoted in an article titled, "Eminem suit targets Apple." The article focuses on Eminem's music publisher multimillion-dollar lawsuit filed on July 30 against Apple Computer Inc., alleging copyright violations by allowing unauthorized downloads on iTunes.

According to Owen, a "burning issue" in the music industry today is whether the rights record labels hold to sell a recording artist's CDs include the rights to authorize music downloads, or whether further permission is needed from the music publishers who hold the copyrights to the lyrics and sheet music. A related issue, Owen says, is whether downloads are treated as licensing agreements or as a sale. If downloads are treated as licensing agreements, the recording label and the artist split revenue equally. If the download is treated as a sale, which is typical, the artist only gets a royalty, or a much smaller share, he said.

The Arizona Republic, May 25, 2007 -- Owen was featured in a front page article on Jordin Sparks, the sixth American Idol winner.

"It's an unbelievable opportunity, and it has to be handled carefully and built on...This will be a big adjustment for her, from being a total unknown to one of the most well-known people in the United States. But if you don't build a solid career based on it, people forget," Owen said.

New York Times, May 16, 2007 -- Owen was quoted in an article on legacy acts that have found new audiences many decades after they formed their band. Owen says there are many older performers who still have working careers even if they do not sell many records. He cited performers like Poison, Kenny Rogers and Ozzy Osborne as still going strong.

Owen represents many high-profile acts such as Rob Thomas, Matchbox 20, Suzanne Vega, and Chris Daughtry, a 2006 Idol runner-up who has sold more than 2 million copies of his self-titled debut album.
