Rachel Stilwell Comments On Internet Radio for IP Law & Business

Rachel Stilwell was featured in the June 2007 issue of IP Law & Business article, "Internet Radio In The Balance." The article examines webcasting and the recent royalty hikes by the Copyright Royalty Board. Rachel commented that "the main reason SoundExchange had to ask for those rates is the large number of consumers who are stealing music online rather than buying it." She added that terrestrial radio has never had to pay performance royalties, and to some extent, SoundExchange is using webcasting to make up for the opportunity lost when terrestrial radio was exempted from having to pay those same royalties decades ago.

Rachel advises musical artists and record companies on copyright, trademark and publicity rights issues. She also advises graphic artists and curators on contractual and intellectual property issues. She is the author of "Which Public? Whose Interest? How the FCC's Deregulation of Radio Station Ownership Has Harmed the Public Interest, and How We Can Escape the Swamp," that was filed as an Official Comment in FCC Proceeding 06-121 on Media Ownership.
